Description

A traditional festival that has now become a huge event. Its roots date back to the tradition of people spoiling themselves before the Lenten fast.

On Fat Tuesday or Jueves Ladero, there is a tortilla competition. Each tortilla is judged on taste, filling and overall presentation. Catalunya has a long standing tradition of perfecting spicy dishes and sausages so expct the end result to be "picante".

Barcelona Carnival

At the weekend, the festival takes on a competitive edge as local groups and businesses compete for the Golden Peper "Pimento de Oro". The grand finale takes place on Saturday
when the celebrations come to a climactic end with the Gran Rua de Carnaval a huge parrade that rivals the best in the world.

As the festivities end, a funeral takes place.... The king of Carnival is dead and his widows mourn his passing in a final farewell parade. If you ever see one festival in Barcelona, then make it this one.

Note, most of the parades take place in local districts in Barcelona. There is no main parade. Sitges holds one of the biggest parades for Carnival. VIsit Gay Sitges Guide for more info.
