Description
June 23rd is celebrated in Barcelona as the night of Sant Joan, one of the shortest nights of the year. People hold parties all night long, with fireworks, bonfires, and coca (the traditional cake, that is, not the other kind).

One of the biggest traditions is the fireworks display held by diables (devils) from local towns; there are a number of these held all over town, but the most popular ones are on or near the beach. Unlike the sort of fireworks display where you "ooh" and "ahh" from a distance, a correfoc gives you a front-row view of the action.

The word correfoc literally means "running with fire", and part of the tradition of Sant Joan is to hold fireworks displays where performers run through showers of sparks and jump over bonfires. At times, even the spectators take part, getting sprayed with sparks or dancing with the diables.

The Plaça de la Barceloneta lights up with fireworks as the Sant Joan festivities get underway. Contrary to what you might expect, the fireworks are only a few meters away from the crowd (and in some cases right overhead), so it's not entirely a spectator event.

This year the Gay Churingito at Mar Bella has a special all night party taking place on San Juan Eve. Check out the blog for event details.
