Catalans do things differently. While St Valentie's Day is populare, St Georges day or Lovers day is a huge tradition in Barcelona. Also know as the day of the book and the rose, more than 5 million roses are purchased for this festival. Women give their men a rose, while the men in return give their girlfriends or wives a rose.
The Ramblas becomes a virtual outdoor bookshop with many stores offering special discounts on books. The festival is based on the legend of St George who famously slayed a dragon. The dragon's blood miraculously transfromed into a Red rose which he in turn gave to a princess.
We're not sure what the "gay take" on this is... so just give a book and a rose... and avoid an argument later on in the evening.
