Shopping in Barcelona

Straight Shopping

Shopping in BarcelonaShopping in gay Barcelona is a delight. The Catalan capital has its own unique shops where you will find quality goods at competitive prices, as well as top international designer names.

Barcelona is one big shop window display, offering traditional and modern shops, which are part of its identity and uniqueness. The city is what makes the shopping experience different. Its world-renowned, 5-kilometre retail thoroughfare, the Barcelona Shopping Line, stretches from the Port Vell, the Raval, La Rambla, the Ribera, the Gothic Quarter, crosses the Plaça Catalunya, through the Eixample district and continues along the Avinguda de la Diagonal, where it ends. You can make your purchases in a whole host of shops as you walk through the city’s prettiest streets and neighbourhoods.

Shopping in BarcelonaWhen you want to go shopping in Barcelona you have to bear in mind that most shops are not open during lunchtime/siesta. In general, they're opened during weekdays from 9-1.30 and from 5-8. On Sundays, most shops don't open their doors in the afternoon. There are various shopping areas. The most elegant shopping places can be traced at the Passeig de Gracia, the Rambla de Catalunya, Avingunda Diagonal and at the Eixample. For small boutiques and souvenirs, try Carrer Tuset.

If you're looking for some real Spanish-style shops, don't forget to explore the area between the Ramblas and Via Laietana, especially around Carrer de Ferran. Looking for some real big shopping malls? Then you're at the right place at the harbor, where you can find the shopping centre Maremagnum. They sell everything that is new, modern and fashionable. A must-see is also the megastore of El Progreso that has one establishment at Plaça de Catalunya and another one at Diagonal.

Shopping in BarcelonaIf you are more interested in markets, you shouldn't miss out on the Boqueria at the Ramblas which starts early in the morning. A very popular place for youngsters and yups is Santa Rosa de Copán. It has, besides many cafes and bars, over 100 stores that contribute to the lively character of the boulevard and make it into a popular place to visit. For those who have a rather chic taste, Sogo has an impressive number of design fashion (Dior, Sonia Rykiel, Prada etc). The last main shopping area in Barcelona is the Barri Gothic for trendy streetwear, secondhand clothes, interesting junk and antiques.

Shopping in BarcelonaThe Bus Shopping Line is one of the most convenient way to enjoy the centre of Barcelona. The service operates on a specially designed route which runs from Pla ça Catalunya to the Diagonal (Plaza Pius XII). Buses depart every seven minutes and connect the major stores, the city’s modernista landmarks (La Pedrera, the Casa Batlló, the Casa Amatller...), with a wide range of restaurants and city-centre cinemas. A trip round the heart of Barcelona.

When it comes to gay-shopping, there are plenty of options. All of the major fashion brands are here.

The Gay Angle

Shopping in BarcelonaBarcelona is home to some of the oldest sex shops in Spain... well we did say this city was liberal. Most of the shops offer a wide arrange of sex toys, videos and other novelties with a catalan twist!

Some of the shops, such as Boyberry, include cruising zones, mini-cinemas, dark-rooms and private cabins. D-Arness, on Casanova offers something for those with a leather fetish and is a great place to go if you want to go for the butch look during Carnival!

Barcelona is even home to a museum dedicated to the S&M and Erotic scene and is located right on the Ramblas.

Shopping in BarcelonaThere are 3 main bookstores catering to Gay clientele in Barcelona. Antinous sells a large range of English language books and has a great cafe attached where you can chill out and relax.

Complices and Nosotros are a great place to find out what's happening on the gay scene. You can also pick up the latest gay magazines, maps and guides to the city, many of them for free.
